The University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School named Erika James of Emory University as its next dean, the first woman and African-American to head the prestigious business school in its 139-year history.⠀ ⠀ James takes over the top-ranked Ivy League program as applications to U.S. M.B.A. programs have fallen for five straight years. Applications to Wharton’s two-year M.B.A. program were down about 5% in 2019. ⠀ ⠀ James has led Emory’s Goizueta school since 2014. There, she grew the school’s faculty by 25% by the end of her first term, Wharton said. She has also led faculty and student workshops on topics such as unconscious bias and building trust across divides, topics that are increasingly important to business schools.⠀ ⠀ James will take over the role July 1. ⠀ ⠀ 📷: Emory University
